Price range: CHF10.00 through CHF13.00

Description

  • Intro: Unique organic coffee from Costa Rica. The coffee comes from a so-called “Blue Zone”, where the inhabitants have an above-average life expectancy. The “light” or “New England” roast is ideal for French press, filter coffee or moka pot lovers. The light roast allows the coffee to retain its diverse aromas and slightly more acidity. Earthy characteristics such as chocolate flavor, nuts and smoky notes are less noticeable. The coffee will be freshly roasted for you (hand-roasted) from the date of order.
  • Origin: The coffee comes from the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica and grows on the highlands of Hojancha, Nicoya and Santa Cruz at an altitude of 700-1,000 meters above sea level. Because the inhabitants of this region have an above-average life expectancy, it is one of the 5 so-called “Blue Zones” known worldwide.
  • Coffee Type & Preparation Process: 100% Arabica (organic quality, without certification). Washed process (wet processing): in this process, the pulp is removed after harvesting and the bean is dried without the pulp. The coffee tastes very clear and clean and contains beautiful fruit acids.
  • Roasting Level & Preparation: Deep/light roast, also known as “New England”. Roasting is stopped at the peak of the “first crack” (first cracking of the beans) and cooled to room temperature within 5 minutes. The degree of roast is ideal for: French press, filter coffee and the moka pot.
  • Waiting Time, Shelf Life & Storage: The coffee should be left to rest for 1 week before use. Freshly roasted coffee contains CO₂, which must first escape (via the valve in the packaging supplied). CO₂ behaves like a protective film and prevents optimum extraction. After a week, the coffee can then be drunk within 1.5 months. The coffee tastes best during this time. We recommend storing the coffee in the bag provided in a cool, dry place (not in the fridge). Of course, the best-before date extends far beyond 1.5 months and the coffee is still edible.
  • Fair Trade: Way back to you operates a direct trade with the Coope Pilangosta cooperative and pays it a fair price (fair trade), which enables it to establish itself sustainably. Direct trade avoids unnecessary price increases by middlemen. The cooperative has been uniting various coffee producers on the Nicoay Peninsula since 1962 with the aim of creating better social and economic conditions for the local population.
  • Sustainability: coffee is produced in organic quality. Due to the relatively high costs involved, the cooperative has not yet obtained official certification (organic label). The coffee company is part of the NAMA coffee program, which aims to reduce the CO2 footprint of coffee companies.
  • Sustainable Impact: Way back to you visited the cooperative on site and gained an impression of the sustainable production. The cooperative ensures the economic and social development of the communities in the region. Through a fair trade pricing policy, it is able to support the financing of school projects, retirement homes, the creation of access to drinking water and the realization of social projects. Way back to you is pleased to be able to make a contribution here and is happy to accept the higher price of green coffee.

Flavor analysis: due to the light roasting, the coffee retains its diverse aromas and slightly more acidity. Earthy characteristics such as chocolate flavor, nuts and smoky notes are less apparent. Instead, you experience fresh aromas of lemons and oranges as well as a slight sweetness of sugar cane and caramel.
